WHAT IS TALENT?
One question that always come up when people talk to me about my art courses is about their talents, the phrasing maybe be different but the underlying theme is the same. Is whether they have talent or not, I believe when it comes to art people have a very distorted version about what talent is and what they are capable of doing or not, I think if people just pull up their sleeves and go out and do something they will be amaze of what they are capable of achieving.
What is talent? What pictures come to your mind when you think about talent, most people when ask this question get all sort of negative images of past failures, old fears or somebody else’s prejudice, if you just change that image an approach any art project with a positive image you will surprise yourself, remember always we are a blank slate we choose what ideas come into our mind why not pick only positive ones and reject negative ones, they are not yours to begin in the first place.
If you look up the word “talent” you’ll come up with terms like a marked ability or skill.
This takes people to believe that some people are born with it and other doesn’t and there’s is nothing they can do about it. This is something I refuse to believe, there’s nothing you cannot achieve if you don’t put your will to it, it all comes down to desire and the degree of how strong it is to move you to accomplish something, I agree in this with Craig Tanner in “The Myth of Talent” –Talent is a set of skills you develop over time through desire.
I think what people confuse the term natural born talent as being born with aptitude for a certain type of task, aptitude is defined as the “capability of learning a task” so all this means it that you might be born with the capability of learning something faster, it shortens your learning curve for something that’s all, it has nothing to do with the level of expertise or quality of the finish product at the end of the process that it has to go through to get it.
Therefore forget all your preconceive images of not being able to do something because you were not born with the talent for doing whatever you want to do, everything is within your reach if you are willing to learn the skills for it, so join me in this quest for learning and in this particular case for learning to draw, paint and develop your overall artistic side in the following week I’ll be releasing articles on how developing your art skill, a free online magazine with articles, expert advice on different subjects and special offers on art product to get you started so be checking up this page from time to time or join my mailing list to get the newest updates, I hope you join me in the most interesting of explorations, probably the one most important of all times
